Continuing Education Workshops for LMTs in Portland, OR

I started the Deep Dive line of evening workshops in fall of 2022 with 6 workshops and a dream of elevating the work we do and creating a community of like-minded bodyworkers and massage therapists. The response was humbling and overwhelming. I continued to create new workshops as students had interest and questions and curiosities. Now up to 17 individual workshops and growing, the Deep Dives are a rotating series of small, Tuesday evening workshops that I run at my bodywork studio in the Mt Tabor Neighborhood in SE Portland, OR.

4 Contact Hour CEs each ~ 5-9 PM ~ $100 ~ NCBTMB Approved Provider #1000101

Currently the Deep Dive Series includes:

"Knot the Rhomboids?!” - An exploration into the deep thoracic spine anatomy and techniques to ease, free, mobilize and enliven this often misunderstood area.

“Every. Single. Bone.” - An exploration of lower leg, ankle and foot mechanics and mobilizations. And, that’s right, we cover Every. Single. Bone. of the ankle and foot.

“The Mostly Side Lying Neck Workshop” - The side lying position creates some interesting advantages to working with the neck. In this class we look at the myofascial anatomy of the neck and explore what side lying has to offer us when easing, freeing, and enlivening the neck myofascia.

“All About Tendons” - In this workshop we’ll explore current understanding of tendons and fascia and what we can do about tendons and fascia as bodyworkers. General information will be covered as well including how Nutrition and Lifestyle choices impact the health of fascia.

“Work-Less Workshop - Sustainable Body Mechanics” - This is a spin-off of the “All About Tendons” Workshop where we will explore massage therapist injuries…the statistics are alarming. We will cover ways to incur injury based upon current understanding of injury and connective tissues as well as outline ways to AVOID injury as a manual therapist.

“Give Them a Hand” - This workshop explores the marvel of our main tools as manual therapists: our forearms and hands. We will explore anatomy, common injuries and ways to work the hands that don’t destroy the hands.

“Intraoral Bodywork 101” - By popular request this workshop is what it says: just the basics of how to work inside the jaw to release the masseter, temporalis and both lateral and medial pterygoids.

“Structure & Function Series” -This 5 part Workshop Series (that can be taken individually because each class stands alone) is an extension of the popular Posture Assessment Deep Dives. In it we will explore Posture, Gait, and Functional Movements and Integrative Manual Therapy Strategies for addressing common issues found in the Ankle-Foot-Knee, Hip, Torso, Shoulders, and Neck-Head-Jaw.

“All About the Anterior Cervicals” - By request, this workshop covers the anatomy, indications, contraindications, fascial patterning, movement and posture implications, and bodywork for the SCM, Anterior Scalenes, and the Longus Colli and Capitis. This is aimed to cover the basics and walk students through these muscles for the first time but this class also makes a great clarification and review for practitioners that already work in this area.

“All About the Iliopsoas” - By request, this workshop covers the anatomy, indications, contraindications, fascial patterning, movement and posture implications, and bodywork for the iliacus and psoas muscles. This is aimed to cover the basics and walk students through these muscles for the first time but this class also makes a great clarification and review for practitioners that already work in this area.

“All About the Abdominals” - By request, this workshop covers the anatomy, indications, contraindications, fascial patterning, movement and posture implications, and bodywork for the abdominal muscles. This is aimed to cover the basics and walk students through these muscles for the first time but this class also makes a great clarification and review for practitioners that already work in this area.

“All About the QL (and Lumbar Erector Spinae Muscles)” - By request, this workshop covers the anatomy, indications, contraindications, fascial patterning, movement and posture implications, and bodywork for the quadratus lumborum. This is aimed to cover the basics and walk students through these muscles for the first time but this class also makes a great clarification and review for practitioners that already work in this area.

“Integrative Bodywork Strategies for Scoliosis” - We will explore spinal movement and breathing assessments as well as several bodywork techniques for freeing the structures most commonly affected by scoliosis. Since the techniques and concepts covered are based on spinal mechanics common to every spine they are helpful for ALL spines so these techniques can be beneficial for a vast majority of clients.

“Choose Your Own Adventure Workshop” - Have a topic you’re curious about? Have at least 3 other people interested? Did you miss a Deep Dive that you really wanted to attend? Let’s talk and see what we can come up with!

Feedback from Deep Dive Workshop Students:

Very useful overall - I loved the relatable approach and communication w/ client.

I really enjoyed understanding new techniques that look complex, but it takes minimal effort.

I felt validated in some of the work I have been doing and more confident in the structures I am feeling.

I really appreciated the modeling of each section. All of the parts leading up to the last practice definitely prepared us for the session. I have a specific client that I know will benefit from this education. I had fun and the class was very well paced and we had time to integrate our learning.

I really appreciate the perspective of slowing down and doing what’s easier on my body also helping create ease in client’s body.

I really like the detail, review of anatomy and all the time to practice. Creates an informal learning experience where questions are welcome.

I appreciated the layout - The skeletons are super helpful. Along with the drawings and photos and concise language used.

The value of rib cage mobility and advantages-I never thought of mobility helping in so many ways! One of the best classes I’ve been to in 20 years!

It was really valuable to feel the work on my rib cage and on other students, and I feel much more confident working in these areas. I’ll be much more incentivised to use the side lying work.

[Loved the] 3D role of the rib cage in breathing incorporated into realtime exercise experience with the group.

I loved the quick taste of applicable techniques we can use right away, e.g. the limb pulling for fascial assessment. My brain is happily full and not overloaded. All digestible information.

This class was awesome! Thank you for the photos on the handouts.

I feel like explaining all supporting muscles and directional fibers is so massively important. Great job.
